Terrell McClain, Falcons Agree on 1-Year Contract After 1 Season with Redskins

The Atlanta Falcons and free-agent defensive tackle Terrell McClain reached an agreement Friday.

Atlanta announced the signing. Vaughn McClure of ESPN reported it’s a one-year contract.

Derrius Guice’s first-round grade didn’t survive the league’s predraft evaluation, and the talented running back tumbled to the Washington Redskins with the 59th overall pick.

Immaturity and unreported incidents supposedly caused the free fall. How much is true can be considered moot since he’s in Washington.

New England’s marquee games remain those against Pittsburgh and Kansas City, their fellow first-place AFC teams from 2017. But it also has couple much-anticipated interconference matchups this season.

Here’s looking at all the games on the Patriots’ 2018 slate and an early projection of how their season will play out.

Toughest tests: The Jaguars and Steelers present the toughest road games, but Aaron Rodgers’ Packers and Kirk Cousins’ Vikings will be excellent duels with Tom Brady on his home field. The Texans also gave the Patriots a test with Deshaun Watson in New England last season.

First baseman Tyler Austin was the Yankees’ biggest hitting star with two long homers off Royals starter Eric Skoglund, but Gray finally reverting to his Oakland heyday form was the big story.

Gray (3-3) retired the first 14 hitters he faced in a one-run, eight-inning gem in which he allowed four hits, struck out five, walked one and hit a batter.

And, yes, Gray again was throwing to personal catcher Austin Romine in lowering his ERA from 6.39 to 5.48.

Gray, who left after eight innings with his pitch count at 92, has a 4.08 ERA over his last five starts working with Romine.

Gray lost his perfect game with two outs in the fifth when Royals first baseman Hunter Dozier blooped a single to center. ravens_073

New rule could lead to “more athletic player” on kickoffs

It’s clear that the NFL is experimenting with the kickoff in the hopes of making it safer, but without any specific goal beyond simply making it safer. The play also will be different, given the changes that are expected to become official later this year.

Whether the kickoff survives in this form ultimately depends on whether the play reduces the injury risk. Packers CEO Mark Murphy recently said players are five times more likely to suffer a concussion during a kickoff than a scrimmage play. So what reduced rate would be acceptable to the NFL?

Time will tell whether that’s the case. If not, more changes could occur to the kickoff — including its possible elimination.

“Mark Ingram tested positive for a substance that was not a performance enhancing substance, nor an illegal substance, but a substance in fact permissible with the proper use exemption with the NFL,” the statement says. “He has vigorously challenged the test results through the arbitration process.”

The first part of the defense, that the substance is “permissible with the proper use exemption,” doesn’t mean much. If Ingram had the proper use exemption, the NFL wouldn’t have moved to suspend him in the first place. All sorts of banned performance-enhancing substances, from Adderall to testosterone to human growth hormone, can be prescribed by doctors and used legally. But that doesn’t mean that a player who tests positive for them without having first obtained a therapeutic use exemption is going to get anywhere by noting after the fact that he theoretically could have used the substance legally.

“There’s no doubt that the personal feeling I have about what Tony Romo and Jason Witten brought to the Cowboys during their career, I don’t think I’ve had a moment in the day that at some time I don’t reflect back on those good years and what they contributed,” Jones said. “And I’ve said this: From my standpoint, I can’t help but say, ‘Boy, I really dropped the ball not doing enough to get them in a Super Bowl. That will be and is my biggest regret about my time with the Cowboys.”

Rookie Packers corners Jaire Alexander, Josh Jackson must prove new GM right

New Green Bay Packers GM Brian Gutekunst made the right moves. Now it’s on cornerbacks Jaire Alexander and Josh Jackson to prove they are the right picks and to firm up what has been a weakness for the Packers defense for way too long.

The Packers needed secondary help — they always need secondary help — coming into this draft. Green Bay allowed a 102 QB rating last season, and the image of their cornerbacks getting torched in the 2016 NFC championship game against Atlanta isn’t that far removed from memory. There were staffing changes around coach Mike McCarthy this offseason, but the draft plan didn’t change.

That’s good news in April, but the Packers have been down this road enough times. Green Bay selected Ha Ha Clinton-Dix in the first round in 2014 and Damarious Randall in the first round in 2015. This defense has allowed 62 passing TDs the last two seasons – the only team in the league to allow more than 30 TD passes each of the last two seasons.

So Gutekunst fixed the problem, but the Packers can’t keep fixing the same problem in the draft, not with Aaron Rodgers turning 35 next season and every other team in the NFC North improving. Green Bay will always be in the playoff hunt with Rodgers, but the defense must reach the next level to give him another Super Bowl shot.

Green Bay fans have a running list of cornerbacks who haven’t got the job done since the last Super Bowl run in 2010 — when Williams and Charles Woodson were the starters. There is a standard at the position, and it has not been met this decade.

Carolina sits in the middle of the pack (12th) in terms of strength of schedule based on last year’s records, but a glance at their opponents for this season suggests things could be more difficult, with two tough divisions on the docket in the NFC East and AFC North. The Panthers have only six matchups on the schedule against playoff teams from last season, but they also got stuck with the three teams from the NFC (Seahawks, Cowboys, Lions) that just missed the postseason at 9-7.

Toughest tests: Other than the four sure-to-be brutal matchups against the Saints and Falcons, the Panthers’ toughest game in 2018 likely will be their road matchup against the defending Super Bowl-champion Eagles. steelers_052

Lamet will have reconstructive elbow surgery this week.

The Giants have not yet had enough of Odell Beckham Jr., but they do not have infinite patience with all the noise and talk and controversy surrounding their superstar receiver.

Co-owner John Mara said Sunday he is tired of answering questions about Beckham’s antics. A report surfaced Monday stating Beckham will not step on the field unless he has a contract extension. This came as news to the Giants, but they are aware that when and if the good outweighs the bad with Beckham, it would be time to look for a trade partner and ship him out.

Tisch revealed conversations between general manager Dave Gettleman and Beckham’s representation are at the earliest, most premature stages. Beckham has said he wants to be the highest-paid receiver in NFL history, which would mean a salary in excess of $17 million per year. He is on the books for 2018 for a salary of $8.45 million after the Giants picked up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract.

Beckham will not set foot on a field without a new contract extension — agreed to with the Giants or any team, according to NFL Network. The Giants certainly were braced for Beckham staying away from the team during the offseason voluntary workouts, and it is unclear what not set foot on a field actually means.

Lucchesi (2-0) was sharp in outpitching Tyler Beede (0-1) in a matchup of 24-year-old rookies. Lucchesi walked none and his nine strikeouts were his most in four big league starts. The lefty allowed one run and five hits.

He’s good, Padres manager Andy Green said. It’s fun to watch him pitch. He definitely didn’t want to come out after six innings; he wanted to keep going. I told him he needs to pace himself a little bit. He said, `I need to get a hit.’ On the pitching side he feels real good; on the hitting side he has some work to do.

I never really liked the Giants. I was never a fan. I grew up like 30 minutes from San Francisco. Striking out a close hometown team feels pretty good.

Lucchesi became the first pitcher from the 2016 draft class to reach the majors after Dinelson Lamet hurt his right elbow in his final spring training start for the Padres. Lucchesi got a no-decision in his big league debut March 30 against Milwaukee and again in a home start versus the Rockies on April 5 before earning his first win at Colorado on Tuesday.seahawks_129

The Quenton Nelson-Harry Hiestand relationship could and should continue with the Chicago Bears.

He’s developed me into the player I am today, Nelson said of the former Notre Dame and current Bears O-line coach at the combine, per 670 The Score’s Chris Emma. It would be awesome to continue that development.

Landry is a pure edge-rusher and arguably the best in the class due to his quickness, flexibility and ability to bend the edge.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that the 49ers and offensive tackle Joe Staley agreed to terms on a reworked contract that will give the veteran a raise over the next two seasons, per a source informed of the pact.

Staley was originally due to make $11 million combined in 2018 and 2019. Now, per Rapoport, he’ll make $17.4 million total. This season Staley will get a raise from $5.5 million to $8.72 million.

Most of those losing teams are in dire straits anyway; they’re usually drafting high in the first round for the obvious reason is that they are losing teams, and a usual reason for being a losing team is that you have missed at getting the quarterback position right.

The defensive lineman is in the fifth and final year of his rooke contract, which will pay him $6.9 million. That’s obviously far below Donald’s current market value, and he’s thought to be eyeing a deal north of $20 million per year. While the Rams have expressed an interest in signing him long term, there is still no deal.

Zaire Franklin somehow slid under the radar and wasn’t invited to the combine, but his film and pro day numbers all point to a draftable prospect. He’s a tad undersized, but his instincts and character are worth taking a gamble on.

Tegray Scales filled the stat sheet in 2016 in every category and was a clear leader of the defense. He has the instincts and playmaking knack that simply can’t be coached up. He’ll have to continue developing varied manners to handle power at the point of attack, but the foundation is there for a successful linebacker at the next level.steelers_012

Shohei Ohtani wins pitching debut as Angels defeat A’s

Shohei Ohtani could exhale, at last having made it through a whirlwind week and not one, but two separate debuts in the big leagues.

He got his first career hit, then three days later earned a win on the mound. Souvenir balls for each occasion.

Impressing manager Mike Scioscia with both his poise and repertoire, the two-way star from Japan won his major league pitching debut. He threw three-hit ball over six innings and led the Los Angeles Angels past the Oakland Athletics 7-4 on Sunday.

Personally I feel like I got off to a good start and obviously the team went 3-1 on the first road trip, so I’m very happy with the results, Ohtani said through a translator.

It’s fun watching guys succeed like that, Green said. A guy that’s earning everything he’s getting right now. Fought his way to the big leagues. … You see the power; it’s real. It was a fun game for him, one I’m sure he’ll remember for the rest of his life.

Villanueva homered against the Rockies last season.

The kid’s got power. We saw it last year, Rockies manager Bud Black said. Tonight he was locked in. He got some pitches in the middle of the plate and he’s got some pull power and he lofted the ball three times. What can you say He squared up three balls. Gotta give him credit. He got balls in the middle and he didn’t miss them.

Blue Jays: LHP Jaime Garcia makes his first start for Toronto as the Blue Jays begin a three-game series Monday night against the White Sox. RHP Miguel Gonzalez goes for Chicago.

A big bopper powered the New York Yankees to victory in their most anticipated home opener in years — Didi Gregorius, not Giancarlo Stanton or Aaron Judge.

When the Yankees agreed to acquire Stanton from Miami on Dec. 9, Gregorius playfully tweeted : Hey Skip am i still batting 4th

He sure is.

Gregorius hit a pair of three-run homers and had a career-high eight RBI, helping New York overcame five strikeouts by Stanton in his first game in pinstripes. In Aaron Boone’s chilly first home opener as manager, the Yankees broke a seventh-inning tie and romped over the Tampa Bay Rays 11-4 on Tuesday.

That’s what a cleanup hitter does: You clean up the garbage in front of you, Stanton said.

Starting his fourth season as Derek Jeter’s successor, Gregorius had four hits and walked. He set a major league record for RBI by a player in a home opener and a Yankees record for RBI by a shortstop.patriots_301

Backing up Kinkaid’s effort, the Devils’ offense provided plenty of early support.

Desite the Kings leading in shots, 19-4, in the first period — thanks in large part to four Devils penalties — the Devils took advantage on two of their limited opportunities.

On the Kings’ second power play, Devils forward Michael Grabner forced a turnover and raced down the ice before flipping a shot past Kings goalie Jonathan Quick for a 1-0 lead at 8:29 of the first.

But, by only jumping up to No. 3 overall, the Jets are unlikely to land whichever QB sits at the top of the draft board.

The Cleveland Browns are all but certain to take a passer and it’s also not impossible to think the New York Giants will fall in love with a prospect between now and April 26, even with the team supporting Eli Manning.

It’s clear New York is confident that either their desired QB – perhaps Mayfield, who would be an instant superstar in The Big Apple – will be available, or they have near-identical grades on the top prospects and are happy with whoever they select at their newly acquired draft slot.

Said market includes noteables such as Kenny Vaccaro, Tre Boston and Ron Parker.

Priority No. 1 is out of the way with Drew Brees back.

Focusing on quarterback meant New Orleans ignored much the rest of the market for a few days, though. But they did reunite with cornerback Patrick Robinson, which is a good get, and the addition of safety Kurt Coleman plugs a hole.

Where the Saints missed, though, was in the trenches in front of those two guys. According to Rapoport, the team had a meeting set with Wilkerson, who never wound up leaving Green Bay.

But the market doesn’t lack for options if the Saints want to seek out a consolation prize to help the Cameron Jordan-led front. Richardson is a solid option if the price is right. Or they could go all out and grab Suh, depending on how they view the entire scope of their offseason.

This is something the Saints can hit in the draft, too, but the focus there might be surrounding Brees with as many athletes as possible for a final potential run.patriots_122

Mariners working to finalize one-year deal with Ichiro

Ichiro Suzuki is nearing a return to the Seattle Mariners, who are working to finalize an agreement with the former franchise icon, a source confirmed to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick.

USA Today Sports first reported Monday that Ichiro and the Mariners were close to a one-year major league deal.

Ichiro became a free agent when the Miami Marlins declined his $2 million club option for 2018. The move by the Marlins was the start of an anticipated payroll purge by Derek Jeter’s new ownership group. Jeter and Ichiro were New York Yankees teammates for 2? seasons.

Ichiro ranks 22nd with 3,080 career hits but started only 22 games last year and had 196 at-bats, the lowest total of his 17-year career. He set a big league mark with 109 plate appearances as a pinch hitter, and had a franchise record 27 pinch-hits.

Ichiro was batting .202 on July 4 but hit .315 the rest of the way to finish at .255. He became just the sixth player 43 or older to record at least 50 hits.

Ichiro, who has said he wants to play until he’s 50, was 27 when he began his major league career. He had 1,278 hits while playing nine years in Japan

I wanted Lindor right-handed, etc., so we put him [Chapman] in the game there. And I also had told myself, actually before the game, is that if you get a big lead and you have to use him early, make sure you get somebody up and get him out. So I had it in my mind to do that, and I just didn’t say it to [pitching coach] Chris Bosio in time.”

Would that decision come back to haunt Maddon the next night? After all, it was only five extra pitches and a few easy warm-ups. But combined with his stint on Wednesday, Chapman had thrown 62 pitches, way more than he had in any back-to-back outings all season.

“I feel blessed that I’m just healthy to pitch in this situation,” Chapman said after Game 6. “This is [why] the Cubs brought me over.”

It’s the one move Maddon regretted. How could he forget to get a pitcher up?

“Because you’re thinking about so many things offensively, and you get through the moment [the home run] you wanted to get through, and I’m thinking to myself, ‘If we score right here, you have to get him out.’ So I’m thinking then, ‘Inning’s over, inning’s over.’ And I’m waiting, waiting, I said, ‘Get Stropy up.’ And I just said it too late.”

Scout around: Take a look around the draft room, test each button to see what it does, and get used to the layout of the draft app. Once you’re on the clock, things move quickly!

We have arrived at the final Sunday of the regular season and the Falcons, Super Bowl runners-up last season, are not yet in the playoffs.

The Falcons (9-6) play the Panthers (11-4), who already have secured a playoff berth, though they’re still in the hunt for the division title. A Falcons win and they’re in as the final wild card.

The question for the Falcons, as it has been all season, is whether they can score enough points to beat the Panthers, who defeated them 20-17 earlier this season.

Bennett was flagged but, unlike teammates Sheldon Richardson and Quinton Jefferson, was not ejected.

UNREAL! Michael Bennett didn’t even receive a fine for his major role in the fight at the conclusion of last Sunday’s #Seahawks vs #Jaguars game.

Interesting, that President Trump would claim that national anthem-protesting players are “destroying the NFL.”

Many can recall how by 1986 Trump had destroyed the USFL, breaking ranks to sue the NFL for his New Jersey Generals’ inclusion, though the USFL had been succeeding as a spring-season league — it even had Vegas gambling lines and an ABC national TV contract — leaving hundreds unemployed.

To his last day, Chet Simmons, highly respected USFL commissioner who previously headed NBC Sports then led ESPN to prominence, felt Trump needlessly, selfishly destroyed the league.

Ryan Shazier is leaving the door open for his return. The Steelers linebacker on Wednesday shared a photo on Instagram of himself in a wheelchair at the team’s facility as he provided the latest update in his recovery journey.

“Over the last few weeks, my family and I have tasked Shop 412 with a very important job — to create a design with me that would show our city how much drive and passion I have for it. I wanted to make something that could serve as a representation of my spirit, of my inner fight, and also be a creative way to bring some fire to my squad and to our fans as we head proudly into these playoffs.”

Would the Steelers have gotten past Jacksonville with Shazier on the field? There’s no telling, but Gene Collier of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote this after the 45-42 setback: “With Shazier in the lineup, the Steelers allowed two 100-yard rushers through 12 games. They’ve allowed three in the five games since. With Shazier in the lineup, they allowed 17.75 points per game. Without him, they’ve allowed 28 points per game.”

Saturday’s CBS Sports Classic, a top-flight, student-athletes double-header in New Orleans — Ohio State-North Carolina, UCLA-Kentucky — was played to what appeared to be, at most, a half-empty, 18,000-seat echo chamber.

Scores of vacant expensive courtside seats could not be hidden from constant view. And unless thousands bought tickets in order to watch on big-screen TVs in the luxury restaurant, most lower-level seats went unsold, too.bills_027

Luke Walton puts focus on meditation as Lakers try to fix NBA-worst FT percentage

At this level, mental training is everything. My hope is that the younger players coming through will understand this and follow in the footsteps of Jordan, Kobe, Shaq and the like, in making meditation an essential part of their training regime.

If we can just kind of be present in the here and now, then we lose a lot of that struggle in the mind and then we are not thinking about what is going on elsewhere or what other people are saying … we are really present and focused with what we are doing. So that is the most important tool or benefit that they are getting.

Walton understands that not all the young Lakers have adapted to meditation yet, but he’s hopeful more Lakers will see its benefits.

2. Wyoming QB Josh Allen is something of a scouting enigma at this early point in the draft process. He has physical tools that scouts dream of, and flashes NFL-caliber throws at times, but his college production didn’t match his talent. He also didn’t play in a power conference, and now must show scouts more consistency against tougher competition than he’s used to seeing. Four of five personnel executives recently polled by NFL.com analyst Daniel Jeremiah said they prefer Mayfield over Allen, so this is an opportunity for Allen to change some minds as he competes on the same stage as the Oklahoma QB.

The model itself already features lacing eyelet clips styled after a video game controller, and the PlayStation version brings to life the iconic vivid blue hues of the system, along with the color accents of the controller buttons.

For George, who still travels on road trips with his own PlayStation to clock in time playing a combination of NBA 2K, Madden or Call of Duty, getting his very own system early on was a defining moment in his childhood during the early 2000s.

I just had a knack for video games, George said. As soon as I discovered PlayStation, I was throwing hints here and there to my dad — cutting out the clipping of the video game, cutting out the clippings of the PlayStation, leaving it on his dresser. I remember on Christmas morning, I unwrapped my gift and sure enough it was the PS2. I’ve been a PlayStation guy ever since.

Foles turned back the clock against the Falcons with an efficient 23-for-30, 246-yard night. While he didn’t throw a touchdown pass, Foles also avoided committing a turnover even though he did have to recover two of his own fumbles.cowboys_029
