Christian Yelich cites Jose Fernandez’s death as turning point for Marlins franchise

Yelich, who still keeps in touch with several former Marlins teammates, declined to fire back at Straily.

I have a lot of really good friends on that team that I still talk to multiple times a week, he said. I still talk to [Justin] Bour and [J.T.] Realmuto and [Martin] Prado and [Miguel] Rojas. We’re still really close that way. Dan doesn’t feel the same, but it is what it is. What are you going to do?

For the moment, Beal is existing in virtual reality. The headset is made by Verizon and offers a glimpse into the world of 5G technology, which is still in the development stage. 5G is the future and it will be here sooner rather than later. The company says it will begin offering residential service in Sacramento by the latter half of the year.

Things didn’t quite work out the way Mikaela Shiffrin had hoped during the women’s slalom event on Thursday, resulting in a fourth-place finish, but another American woman will hit the slopes on Friday at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Speed Queen Lindsey Vonn will be competing in hopes of becoming the oldest woman (at 33 years old) to win an Olympic alpine medal.

Shiffrin was originally planning to compete in Friday’s women’s alpine super-g event, but with the schedule changes of the slalom and giant slalom earlier in the week due to wind, she didn’t have as much recovery time to prepare for one of her five events. Now, it’ll be up to Vonn to make up for the medal she missed in 2014 due to a knee injury.

Eric Hosmer and the Padres have finalized their eight-year, $144 million contract.

The team announced the signing Monday night after Hosmer passed his physical. The first baseman, who spent his first seven major league seasons with Kansas City before becoming a free agent this offseason, can opt out of the deal after five years.

Now that some parameters have been set, let’s look at specific players and how their outlook changes. It’s important to reiterate the range of outcomes is even wider than normal. Player expectation should always be thought of in terms of a range. The difference is now, until we get a better handle on post-humidor Chase Field, the error bar associated with Arizona players lengthens.bears_015

Reds get minor leaguer from Texas for international money

The Texas Rangers have traded minor league right-hander Miguel Medrano to the Cincinnati Reds for money to sign international free agents.

The deal was made Wednesday.

Until this January, life as a Philadelphia Eagles fan was mostly misery. The team’s last championship came in 1960, six years before the creation of the Super Bowl. Philly made only two of the first 51 Super Bowls, losing Super Bowl XV by 17 points to the Raiders despite going to New Orleans as the favorite and then losing Super Bowl XXXIX to the Patriots in a game most remembered for Donovan McNabb vomiting and Andy Reid managing the least-urgent comeback in history. Philly fans were most noted for their misplaced passion, as evidenced by the courtroom and jail at the Vet, as well as their proclivity for throwing batteries.

And then, the Eagles won the Super Bowl and their fans went through the seven stages of celebration.

The ZiPS projections give the Astros a 14.4 percent chance of winning the World Series. As preseason projections go, it’s hard to start with a probability much better than that given how MLB’s postseason is structured and just how the game of baseball works. A team that enters four consecutive seasons with a 14.4 percent shot at winning the World Series is still more likely than not (54 percent) to get completely shut out of the championship.

Houston looked like a juggernaut on the way to 101 wins in 2017, never relinquishing the division lead after April 12th. Even a midseason spell during which pretty much every starting pitcher was injured — the Astros ended up with zero ERA crown qualifiers — wasn’t enough to ever reduce the team’s AL West cushion to 10 games.

But when any team wins 101 games, it’s likely that a lot more went right than wrong. More 101-game winners are lucky 95-win teams rather than unlucky 107-win ones. And right now, ZiPS projects six other teams to have at least a 5 percent chance of winning the World Series. The computer projects roughly a 63 percent chance that the World Series winner in 2018 is one of these six teams, so it’s more likely than not that one of them will be this year’s baseball regicide.

Brandin Cooks is out of Super Bowl 52.

The Patriots receiver was taken to the locker room to be evaluated for a concussion following a devastating hit from Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins. The Patriots quickly ruled him out for the remainder of the game.

A wide-open Cooks had caught a 23-yard pass from Tom Brady and was trying to evade Eagles defenders when Jenkins nailed him with a blindside hit.

The expansive window of Brady’s success in New England, with one dynasty building on another, is what slams the door vs. other players.

When Sporting News interviewed Tom Brady before the 2000 draft, he wanted to sell to scouts the idea that, despite everything they thought they saw, the intangible of his fiery desire was off the charts. He still uses the same lines to describe his passion for dominating the game.

Super Bowl 52 will be broadcast on NBC and streamed on the NBC Sports app. A start time has yet to be officially announced but the game has kicked off around 6:30 p.m. ET. in previous years. NBC will also have pre-and-post game coverage.

NBC will receive about $5 million for a 30-second commercial during its Super Bowl coverage, according to a report by Sports Illustrated media writer Richard Deitsch. Deitsch also reported that as of Jan. 14, NBC had fewer than 10 commercial spots available for purchase.

Let’s be clear: This Brady retirement speculation only applies if the Patriots beat the Eagles on Sunday. The competitive fire that continues to fuel Brady in Year 18 likely would not allow him to quit on the heels of another title-game loss. Those two missed opportunities against the Giants still haunt Brady, one of those guys who remembers more about the devastating losses than the career-defining wins.

The trade also could be meaningful to Garoppolo’s future. He is eligible for unrestricted free agency after this season. But with Brady having turned 40 and no other quarterback of the future in the fold, the Patriots might be inclined to try to keep Garoppolo beyond this season. Could that include using their franchise-player tag on a backup quarterback? bills_047

We have arrived at the final Sunday of the regular season and the Falcons, Super Bowl runners-up last season, are not yet in the playoffs.

The Falcons (9-6) play the Panthers (11-4), who already have secured a playoff berth, though they’re still in the hunt for the division title. A Falcons win and they’re in as the final wild card.

The question for the Falcons, as it has been all season, is whether they can score enough points to beat the Panthers, who defeated them 20-17 earlier this season.

Bennett was flagged but, unlike teammates Sheldon Richardson and Quinton Jefferson, was not ejected.

UNREAL! Michael Bennett didn’t even receive a fine for his major role in the fight at the conclusion of last Sunday’s #Seahawks vs #Jaguars game.

Interesting, that President Trump would claim that national anthem-protesting players are “destroying the NFL.”

Many can recall how by 1986 Trump had destroyed the USFL, breaking ranks to sue the NFL for his New Jersey Generals’ inclusion, though the USFL had been succeeding as a spring-season league — it even had Vegas gambling lines and an ABC national TV contract — leaving hundreds unemployed.

To his last day, Chet Simmons, highly respected USFL commissioner who previously headed NBC Sports then led ESPN to prominence, felt Trump needlessly, selfishly destroyed the league.

Ryan Shazier is leaving the door open for his return. The Steelers linebacker on Wednesday shared a photo on Instagram of himself in a wheelchair at the team’s facility as he provided the latest update in his recovery journey.

“Over the last few weeks, my family and I have tasked Shop 412 with a very important job — to create a design with me that would show our city how much drive and passion I have for it. I wanted to make something that could serve as a representation of my spirit, of my inner fight, and also be a creative way to bring some fire to my squad and to our fans as we head proudly into these playoffs.”

Would the Steelers have gotten past Jacksonville with Shazier on the field? There’s no telling, but Gene Collier of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote this after the 45-42 setback: “With Shazier in the lineup, the Steelers allowed two 100-yard rushers through 12 games. They’ve allowed three in the five games since. With Shazier in the lineup, they allowed 17.75 points per game. Without him, they’ve allowed 28 points per game.”

Saturday’s CBS Sports Classic, a top-flight, student-athletes double-header in New Orleans — Ohio State-North Carolina, UCLA-Kentucky — was played to what appeared to be, at most, a half-empty, 18,000-seat echo chamber.

Scores of vacant expensive courtside seats could not be hidden from constant view. And unless thousands bought tickets in order to watch on big-screen TVs in the luxury restaurant, most lower-level seats went unsold, too.bills_027

The defending NFC champs enter the postseason on a high note after beating the Panthers on Sunday to punch their wild-card ticket.

San Francisco 49ers safety Eric Reid, one of the players whose kneeling prompted Pence’s exit, said after the game that “this is not about the military. This is not about the flag. This is not about the anthem. My mother served in the armed forces. Three of my uncles served in the armed forces. .?.?. I have the utmost respect for the military, for the anthem, for the flag.”

There is no easy way to calculate how many NFL players, like Reid, have personal ties to the military. But it is possible to calculate which states have produced current NFL players at the highest rates (using data from Sports Reference and the Census Bureau) and compare the results to military enlistment rates.

In other words, we can see whether the environments most likely to promote military service — patriotic environments, presumably — are the same environments most likely to yield pro football players.

It was a fairly disappointing season for QB Matt Ryan after his MVP performance in 2016, and the Atlanta offense was not the same without departed coordinator Kyle Shanahan. But the presence of Ryan, WR Julio Jones and RB Devonta Freeman make the Falcons a dangerous opponent for the Rams thanks to their postseason experience.

Tomlin’s dubious decisions continued to include failing to overrule two terrible calls on essential fourth-and-inches situations. He then chose to follow his gut — which told him his defense had been terrible and the 1-in-10 chance of recovering an onside kick was greater than getting a three-and-out — and wound up handing Jacksonville a clinching field goal.

Kansas State star defensive end Jordan Willis was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year but many overlooked the Wildcat star given the lack of defensive firepower in the Big 12. As such, he did nothing but answer all the questions with an extraordinary workout. He ran 4.53 in the 40, threw up 24 reps on the bench, jumped 39 inches on the vertical, over 10 feet in the broad jump and his shuttle times were outstanding (6.85 seconds on the three-cone and 4.28 on the short shuttle). Former Kansas State All-American linebacker Mark Simoneau has trained Willis since his days in high school and did a fabulous job getting Willis ready for Indy.

The notion of the dreaded locker room “distraction” is mindless coach-speak.

It’s silly to believe that grown men cannot go about their business because they might be asked a question about something one of their teammates did. But NFL coaches believe in it. NFL teams believe in it. And they avoid distractions at all costs when a player’s on-field talents do not outweigh the threat that distraction presents.

From what I’ve seen, a lot of coaches aren’t willing to do a lot of things Coughlin and Belichick carry out at the NFL level. Many are afraid of coaching players hard. I know Belichick isn’t afraid to push the best quarterback in NFL history, and that’s exactly how Coughlin is. They’re equal in that sense. But a lack of this kind of tenacious leadership from the top is what eliminates 80 percent of teams from being able to compete consistently with Belichick’s Patriots. I know Coughlin coaches harder and demands more out of players than at least three-fourths of coaches in the league. That’s why Coughlin’s teams have enjoyed success vs. Belichick.

Carr: In New York, and from what I see in Jacksonville this season, Coughlin’s teams run very simple schemes on offense and defense. When Steve Spagnuolo was the Giants’ defensive coordinator in 2007 and ’08, he’d always want to do these elaborate defenses, and Coughlin immediately shut those down. It sounds crazy, but Coughlin wanted the opposing offense to know the scheme — even Tom Brady.

Things went decidedly downhill from there, of course. Kelly was given more power by Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and the results were calamitous. He overhauled the roster in highly questionable fashion and was ousted by Lurie less than one full season later.

So back to those final moments. It is not overstating the situation to say that the AFC might have turned on them. The Steelers and Patriots have both won their divisions and, with both at 11-3, the victorious Patriots now own the all-important tiebreaker for home-field advantage. And a key to having a chance to topple the Patriots in the playoffs is to get them out of Foxborough.

The Steelers were seven yards from nearly guaranteeing they would not have to make the trip to New England for what still feels like an inevitable rematch. But the Patriots have a way of making their opponents, even the mentally tough ones like the Steelers, unravel. They make them overthink. They make them nervous. They make them do things that make no sense.cowboys_079

LeBron James came up just short of 30,000 points.

“I would hope not, but I really don’t know,” James said when asked if Lue could be fired. “I don’t know what’s going to happen with our team. I have no idea what conversations have been going on. Me personally, I’ve been trying to stay as laser-sharp as I can to keep my guys ready to go out and play.

“Obviously, it hasn’t resulted in wins, but I got to stay as fresh mentally as much I can with the struggles. I can’t worry about job securities and trades and things of that nature. I just stay as focused as I can every night to go out and compete and try to help us win ballgames.”

“Obviously I think there’s an expectation of the way I play on Sunday and how I’m going to play,” Rodgers said when he met with reporters this week. “I enjoy those expectations. I enjoy meeting those or exceeding those. … Hopefully it gives a lift to some of the guys. But I’m not coming back to save this team. I’m coming back to play quarterback the way I know how to play it. And hopefully we all raise the level of our play collectively and find a way to win these three games.”

But with three head coaching jobs now filled and three openings left — the Rams, San Francisco 49ers and San Diego Chargers — it suddenly appears possible that at least one of the offensive coordinators once thought to be at the head of this class — the New England Patriots’ Josh McDaniels and the Atlanta Falcons’ Kyle Shanahan — could be passed over.

A year ago, there were seven new head coaches hired league-wide, and all seven were offensive coaches.

Ballage presents a strong physical build for a running back, and has pro-caliber speed and agility. He was never the lead back for a sustained period in college, however, averaging fewer than 10 carries a game over his career. He was a factor as a receiver as a junior (44-469, one TD) but did not receive those opportunities this past fall (20-91). Showing an ability to run, catch, and pass-protect during Senior Bowl practices will give him a chance to leapfrog some of the underclassmen that make his an extremely competitive running back class.cowboys_053

Luke Walton puts focus on meditation as Lakers try to fix NBA-worst FT percentage

At this level, mental training is everything. My hope is that the younger players coming through will understand this and follow in the footsteps of Jordan, Kobe, Shaq and the like, in making meditation an essential part of their training regime.

If we can just kind of be present in the here and now, then we lose a lot of that struggle in the mind and then we are not thinking about what is going on elsewhere or what other people are saying … we are really present and focused with what we are doing. So that is the most important tool or benefit that they are getting.

Walton understands that not all the young Lakers have adapted to meditation yet, but he’s hopeful more Lakers will see its benefits.

2. Wyoming QB Josh Allen is something of a scouting enigma at this early point in the draft process. He has physical tools that scouts dream of, and flashes NFL-caliber throws at times, but his college production didn’t match his talent. He also didn’t play in a power conference, and now must show scouts more consistency against tougher competition than he’s used to seeing. Four of five personnel executives recently polled by NFL.com analyst Daniel Jeremiah said they prefer Mayfield over Allen, so this is an opportunity for Allen to change some minds as he competes on the same stage as the Oklahoma QB.

The model itself already features lacing eyelet clips styled after a video game controller, and the PlayStation version brings to life the iconic vivid blue hues of the system, along with the color accents of the controller buttons.

For George, who still travels on road trips with his own PlayStation to clock in time playing a combination of NBA 2K, Madden or Call of Duty, getting his very own system early on was a defining moment in his childhood during the early 2000s.

I just had a knack for video games, George said. As soon as I discovered PlayStation, I was throwing hints here and there to my dad — cutting out the clipping of the video game, cutting out the clippings of the PlayStation, leaving it on his dresser. I remember on Christmas morning, I unwrapped my gift and sure enough it was the PS2. I’ve been a PlayStation guy ever since.

Foles turned back the clock against the Falcons with an efficient 23-for-30, 246-yard night. While he didn’t throw a touchdown pass, Foles also avoided committing a turnover even though he did have to recover two of his own fumbles.cowboys_029

Three takeaways from Saints’ win over Panthers

After the Saints swept the regular-season series with the Panthers, they completed the hat trick on Sunday with a 31-26 victory in an NFC wild-card game at the Superdome.

The Panthers (11-6) had a chance late, getting the ball back down by five with under two minutes remaining. Panthers quarterback Cam Newton drove his team to the New Orleans 21-yard line, but Saints safety Vonn Bell sacked Newton on fourth-and-23 from the 34-yard line to clinch it.

The Pro Bowl tight end was about the only offense the Panthers had in New Orleans. Olsen finished with eight catches for 107 yards and the touchdown. Newton went 24 of 40 for 349 yards and two touchdowns. Newton and the Panthers needed someone other than Olsen to make a play and it just didn’t happen until rookie running back Christian McCaffrey scored on a 56-yard catch-and-run with 4:09 remaining. McCaffrey, who had 37 rushing yards, finished with six receptions for 101 yards.

Two of the past three first-round picks have been disciplined now—cornerback Eli Apple for a season of immaturity and unprofessionalism, and Flowers for a poor attitude and oft-indifferent play. Flowers and Apple were the ninth and 10th overall picks, respectively, in the 2015 and 2016 drafts (the Giants bypassing Todd Gurley in ’15 and Taylor Decker in ’16 at big need positions), and now Gettleman is going to have to decide if these poor draft choices have any future in blue.

2018 NFL Divisional Round: 10 fast facts for Patriots vs. Titans

As far as playing as long as I’ve been playing and then, I guess, with the success I’ve had, I’ve been blessed, said Bryant, who converted on 87.2 percent of his field-goal attempts while also making all 35 of his extra-point tries in the regular season. To be honest with you, I probably could be in a lot better shape. I still kick the same as far as twice a week [during practice] on Wednesday and Friday. If something is sore or not feeling right, I may just kick one day that week.

If Herron can protect on those downs, too, the drop off shouldn’t be too immense from Bradshaw.: Considering this group is coming off arguably their best game of 2015, I ‘t any changes to the reps for that group.Oshie and shutdown rearguard Alzner are eligible for UFA status July.Great places like The Station fail.Captain Jonathan Toews tweeted, Sooouuuup!

The 21-year-old rushed for 596 yards and eight touchdowns for the Crimson Tide in 2017. He ran for 1,512 yards and 20 touchdowns during his time at Alabama.

Scarbrough is not expected to be a top pick in the draft as some have him projected to be a fifth- or sixth-round pick. However, he could very well be a late riser if he tests well at the combine.

The normally conservative CBS Sports gambled this season by bumping longtime NFL analyst Phil Simms in favor of TV rookie Tony Romo. The risky move paid off big-time. Romo has quickly become one of the most original and popular analysts on sports TV. Unless Jim Nantz suddenly retires, CBS is set with him and Romo on Sunday afternoons for the next decade.

No, former Jets coach Rex Ryan is not on the list. He’s been disappointing on ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown. And no, the surly Jay Cutler is not on my list, either. After eagerly pursuing the No. 2 analyst job at Fox Sports behind Troy Aikman last offseason, Cutler jilted Fox for the Dolphins. Good for him. But ESPN’s attitude will probably be: Fool me twice, shame on me. So scratch Cutler.

A statement was released by Pittsburgh Steelers Director of Communications Burt Lauten, who confirmed the threat and thanked law enforcement.
