The testimonials presented by teammates, rivals and colleagues during Monday’s award ceremony were a small indication.

From retired greats like Donovan and Guillermo Barros Schelotto (now one of of three Argentines to win the MLS MVP award), to fellow Timbers, rivals and even AS Monaco’s Radamel Falcao (a former teammate at Porto), appreciation for Valeri’s talent was almost always accompanied by words about the man. Montreal’s Ignacio Piatti and Dallas’s Maxi Urruti called Valeri a “great person.” Teammates dubbed him a “role model” (David Guzmán) and a “big brother” (Zarek Valentin), and Donovan himself said Valeri is “an inspiration to all of us.”

When it came time to pick a real college, she chose Providence, arriving in 1983, the same year the men’s team welcomed a new point guard of its own: Donovan, whose not-so-svelte build at the time led to much grief from coach Rick Pitino. “I like to tease Billy and tell him he was the second best point guard in the class of ’87,” says Burke. “But the real truth of the matter is the only thing I had over Billy was that my physique was far better our first couple of years.”

Donovan, who dropped 30 pounds and led the Friars to the Final Four as a senior, says, “I defer to Doris.”

The defense also has produced nine turnovers in that span.

That total would be 10 if Johnson had not dropped a gimmie interception late in the fourth quarter Sunday

“That was so bad,” Johnson said with a laugh.

The Chiefs did convert two Dolphins fumbles into Harrison Butker field goals while avoiding any such mistakes of their own.

“Turnovers were the key,” Johnson said. “You create momentum when you force the other team to turn the ball over. When you do that, especially in this stadium, it makes it hard to win.”

Johnson got the ball rolling for Kansas City (9-6) by stripping Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry after a catch on the game’s opening series. The linebacker’s forced fumble was recovered by Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters, who has returned with a vengeance following a one-game Chiefs suspension against the Raiders for his fourth-quarter meltdown during a 38-31 loss to the Jets. Peters recorded two interceptions in last weekend’s win over the Chargers.

With Joel Embiid in a different city entirely, the Philadelphia 76ers got a spark from an unlikely source.

Jerryd Bayless scored all of his 14 points in a key stretch in the second half, and the 76ers rallied from 13 down to beat the Denver Nuggets 107-102 on Saturday night.

Dario Saric had 20 points and nine rebounds and keyed a second-half run, JJ Redick had 18 points and Robert Covington had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Bucs safety T.J. Ward arrested on marijuana possession charge

T.J. Ward was arrested Wednesday in Tampa Bay on an outstanding warrant relating to a previous arrest.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department, the Buccaneers safety was taken into custody at 8:11 a.m ET and faces a felony count of possession of marijuana in addition to a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Second-year Rams QB Jared Goff threw four touchdown passes in Week 17, tying his career high. He finished with 28 TD passes, the sixth most in a single season in team history.

“We were outworked, simple as that,” Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. “When you’re out-worked, out-hustled, out-skated, out-grinded and out-committed, the rest isn’t going to be in place. That’s the biggest disappointment for me.

“It’s concerning. Especially playing at home at this time of the year when we had something good going. Pre-Christmas we were on a roll and felt good about ourselves. But that doesn’t happen automatically, you have to show up and at least attempt to out-work the other team. We had none of that today.”

Winnipeg scored on its first shot of the game — at 2:34 of the first period. Matt Hendricks set up Dano at the side of the net for a tap-in. Dano had been a healthy scratch for the previous 30 games.

Antonio Brown calls block on Vontaze Burfict ‘karma,’ George Iloka hit ‘karma for him too’

Not everyone felt sympathy for Vontaze Burfict as he was carted off the field in Monday’s Pittsburgh-Cincinnati bloodbath.

While Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster spoke with reporters about his illegal block on the Bengals linebacker in the fourth quarter, fellow wideout Antonio Brown could be heard in the background repeating the word “karma” and saying “touchdown Brown” will pay his fine.

Burfict, who has had is own fair share of illegal hits and dirty plays, especially in the Steelers-Bengals rivalry, reportedly was livid as he jumped off the cart and stormed to the locker room after being helped off the field with the injury.

As for Brown, he endured yet another helmet shot courtesy of Bengals safety George Iloka as he scored the tying touchdown with just under four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

“The guy just left his feet and hit me in the head. Karma for him too. Karma,” Brown said. “I was just grateful I was able to get through the game.”

Smith-Schuster and Iloka were each suspended one game later Tuesday for violations of safety-related playing rules.

Peters was suspended for one game without pay earlier this week by the team, and now the NFL has fined Peters for throwing an official’s flag into the stands, according to ProFootballTalk.com.

The suspension will cost Peters $72,320 of his base salary, and the fine will cost him $24,309 for unsportsmanlike conduct. To put that in perspective, that’s a total of $96,629.

Peters tossed an official’s penalty flag into the stands at MetLife Stadium during the Chiefs’ 38-31 loss to the Jets in Week 13, and was then escorted into the locker room.

Chiefs cornerback Steven Nelson was called for defensive holding while the Jets were attempting a two-point conversion after scoring a touchdown. Peters, apparently unhappy with the call, grabbed the penalty flag from the ground and threw it into the stands.

Tom Savage suffers possible concussion; brief return sparks controversy

Tom Savage has exited Houston’s game against the 49ers. But it was his brief return following a possible concussion that created controversy during Sunday’s game at NRG Stadium.

“He got hit on that one play in the end zone,” O’Brien said. “Obviously, the spotter wanted him evaluated. We evaluated him. At that time, made the determination to put him, that he was — not me, obviously the evaluators made the determination to put him back in the game. And then he went back in the game and he came out and they evaluated him a little bit more just because of what they say.

“So, that’s kind of where it’s at. That’s all I really know about it.

“He doesn’t want to come out of the game, but again that’s in the medical people’s hands. They try to make the best decision for the player. Whatever they see and the testing that they do, they try to make the best decision with the player, and they weren’t satisfied with the results of the second test, so they decided to pull him and that’s when he went into the locker room.”

A 31-24 loss to the Panthers Sunday at Bank of America Stadium prevented the Vikings (10-3) from claiming a postseason invitation.

The Vikings (10-3) still could have clinched the division with losses by both the Packers and Lions, but the Packers rallied to beat the Browns in overtime and the Lions held off the Buccaneers late.

The Panthers (9-4) got 103 rushing yards from Jonathan Stewart and Carolina’s defense stifled Minnesota’s offense. Stewart scored three touchdowns for the first time in his career.

Vikings quarterback Case Keenum was sacked six times and had three turnovers. The Panthers kept their own postseason hopes alive, pulling even with the Saints in the NFC South. The Saints do own a tiebreaker, however, by way of a season sweep.

While the snow looked like it was going to hold off for the 1 p.m. kickoff, wind was clearly going to be an issue.

“I don’t anticipate demonstrating this week simply because I felt like when I started demonstrating, my whole motivation was to draw awareness to disenfranchised people, communities of color, injustices around the country, our criminal justice system,” Jenkins said, via the Philadelphia Inquirer. “And obviously through this year and talking with the league and what they’ve kind of proposed, I feel like has presented a bigger and better platform to continue to raise that awareness and continue to [influence] positive change.”

Jenkins told Omnisport last month he needed the social landscape, especially within the league, to change in order to end his protest.

Bookmakers across Las Vegas started monitoring the Buffalo weather forecast closely late in the week. Ed Salmons, who oversees football odds at the Westgate SuperBook, looked at the forecast on Friday and saw that lake-effect snow was expected Sunday night and into Monday.

“I did see a lot of wind, so it put it on the radar that this was definitely going to be an under game,” Salmons told ESPN.

He continued to monitor Taylor’s status and the weather forecast off and on during his Saturday shift, checking the Weather Channel and other outlets.

Around 8:40 p.m. on Saturday, influential offshore sportsbook BetCRIS.com posted the opening line (Buffalo -2.5) and total (40.5). Salmons, noting the weather, opened the total at 38.5 at the Westgate.

the Blackhawks welcome the Florida Panthers to United Center on Tuesday night.

After losing five straight from Nov. 28 to Dec. 6, Chicago (14-11-5) goes for its third straight victory. The Blackhawks followed Friday’s 3-2 overtime win against the Buffalo Sabres with a 3-1 victory Sunday against the Arizona Coyotes.

“The guys were dialed in right from the drop of the puck,” he said. “I thought we were real good. I thought there were lots of things we can build on and move forward with.”

The cost of trading up, according to 2017’s returns, will be steep. The Bears, somewhat confusingly, gave up two third-round picks and a fourth-rounder to move from No. 3 to No. 2 in the pecking order to draft Trubisky. The Chiefs gave up two first-rounders and a third to move from No. 27 to No. 10 to grab Mahomes. The Texans paid what may end up being a bigger price to draft Watson, as the 2018 first-rounder they shipped north to Cleveland currently projects to be the No. 7 pick.

The eight consecutive victories ties the second-longest streak in Kings history (fifth time). . Quick has won six straight. . Staal, too, was pleased with Carolina’s effort. “It was a whole game of working hard,” he said. “We play like that every night, we’re going to be a lot better off.”

Sergei Bobrovsky made sure that Josh Anderson’s early goal would be enough for the Blue Jackets.

Anderson found the back of the net 30 seconds into the game, and Bobrovsky did the rest, recording his 23rd career shutout as Columbus beat the Arizona Coyotes 1-0 on Saturday night.

The reigning Vezina Trophy winner had 35 saves and got his fourth shutout this season as Columbus won its second game in as many days.mariners_759

Capela, Harden lead Rockets over Pelicans 130-123

In a season where the Houston Rockets have become one of the league’s best teams, scoring a career-high in points like Clint Capela did on Monday night doesn’t get congratulations. It draws comments on how he needs to play like he did over the New Orleans Pelicans more often.

Rookie Jordan Bell scored in double figures for the second time with 11 points, while Omri Casspi and Shaun Livingston also started for the defending champions, who were coming off a 6-0 road trip. It marked the franchise’s first time doing so in that long of a stretch away from home.

“We’re going to need that in the future if we want to continue to keep winning with Steph and Draymond out,” Durant said of the contributions from so many players.

Now, the Warriors will get to stay home for almost the entire rest of the year except for a trip to face the Lakers on Dec. 18.

Perry’s right leg bent awkwardly as he ran into the back of Carolina’s Jeff Skinner. The 2011 NHL MVP has played in 239 straight regular-season games and 40 playoff contests since Dec. 28, 2014.

Coach Randy Carlyle said Perry was being evaluated at a hospital.

“I think we looked a little bit tired tonight,” he said. “Even though you’re tired, you get some great performances from a couple of key guys. Quick was great tonight.”

Things did not look promising for Los Angeles through most of overtime. The Hurricanes controlled the puck for almost the entire period.

“I got a little nervous for the guys on the ice because it was a long change,” Stevens said. “I think they probably made three line changes there. I thought the guys played really smart.”royals_039

The Denver Broncos have fired offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Why’d they both get suspended? Players rarely get suspended when they’ve also been ejected from a game. But that’s not a hard and fast rule. Case in point: Marshawn Lynch was ejected and then suspended one game for putting his hands on an official in Week 7.

Both of those topics are more pleasant than the 3-8 Colts, who dropped a 20-16 loss to the Titans on Sunday.

The Colts have blown six halftime leads this year, including against the Titans. Pagano was asked if this situation is starting to feel like Groundhog Day. His answer was a doozy.

Martellus Bennett is a New England Patriots tight end again after his time with the Green Bay Packers came to a contentious end. While Bennett’s problem with the Packers was with the team’s handling of his injury, the players in the locker room still took his departure a little personally.

But the 5-4 team is using the slight as an opportunity to come together and unify the locker room.

We can’t wait to see what celebrations the Eagles come up with for Week 13 and beyond.

That’s natural when a team is as dire of straits are they are now. While was a bit shadier to the most recent stuff, it had plenty of nostalgia for the past, beginning with the films, and .Thanks large part to Backlund and his ability to drive play whenever he’s out on the ice.Belinelli Prior to his career, played for Italy’s Lega A Virtus Bologna and Fortitudo Bologna. The key is that you probably have to sell it very quickly because now is the time when people are the most excited and the most fanatic about these kinds of things.orioles_017
