If retirement is near, this is ‘critical’ time for Brady

After spending nearly an entire year with Tom Brady to film his Facebook documentary, the man who directed the six-part series, Gotham Chopra, doesn’t seem to think that Brady is going to be playing football much longer.
Men's Nike Philadelphia Eagles #32 Rasul Douglas Game Black Alternate NFL Jersey
A big reason Chopra doesn’t think Brady will play much longer is because of the tension that’s grown over the past few years in New England.

Limited Youth Kyle Rudolph Jersey They would save $2.5 million in cap space by parting with John Jerry, their starting guard the past four years, who might be expendable with the addition of Omameh. If they cut linebacker Ray-Ray Armstrong, it is another $1.2 million in cap savings.
Phillip Gaines Limited Jersey
So, there is a way to generate more than $16 million in cap space, if the Giants are inclined to do so, to make a run at a specific player on the market. Marshall and Harris appear to be especially vulnerable, given their ages and declining production.

The Purple People Eaters were vital to the Vikings’ run of reaching the Super Bowl four times in an eight-year span from 1969-1976. The Vikings didn’t reach the Super Bowl in 1971, but this unit might have had its best statistical season, shutting out?opponents three times and allowing an average of just 9.9 points?game. Eller and Page each were enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but a strong case could be made that Marshall belongs Ahkello Witherspoon Jersey as well.

Bennett and his teammates?will have their work cut out for them?if they want?to be considered the best in team history, much less in league history. In the 1991 opener, quarterback Randall Cunningham was lost for the season. Somehow, the?Eagles won 10 games and reached the playoffs with these men behind center: Jim McMahon, Jeff Kemp and Brad Goebel. One of the best defensive lines ever kept the team’s postseason hopes alive. Last year, the 1991 Eagles were named as the best?defense in the past 30 years by Football Outsiders. Led by the Minister of Defense (White), the Eagles allowed under four yards a play.White had 15 sacks that season, and Simmons had 13. Adding nine sacks was Brown, who died in an automobile accident in the summer of 1992.

Years after that throw, I sat in Brady’s living room and asked whether he ever considered the randomness of his career — how, if he’d been drafted by another team or if the ball had bounced the other way, his life might be very different from the one in his beautiful Boston home, lined with beach pictures of his wife. His face tightened, and I realized I’d committed a cardinal sin: crediting luck to a man who built himself by refusing to allow for it.

Backing up Kinkaid’s effort, the Devils’ offense provided plenty of early support.

Desite the Kings leading in shots, 19-4, in the first period — thanks in large part to four Devils penalties — the Devils took advantage on two of their limited opportunities.

On the Kings’ second power play, Devils forward Michael Grabner forced a turnover and raced down the ice before flipping a shot past Kings goalie Jonathan Quick for a 1-0 lead at 8:29 of the first.

But, by only jumping up to No. 3 overall, the Jets are unlikely to land whichever QB sits at the top of the draft board.

The Cleveland Browns are all but certain to take a passer and it’s also not impossible to think the New York Giants will fall in love with a prospect between now and April 26, even with the team supporting Eli Manning.

It’s clear New York is confident that either their desired QB – perhaps Mayfield, who would be an instant superstar in The Big Apple – will be available, or they have near-identical grades on the top prospects and are happy with whoever they select at their newly acquired draft slot.

Said market includes noteables such as Kenny Vaccaro, Tre Boston and Ron Parker.

Priority No. 1 is out of the way with Drew Brees back.

Focusing on quarterback meant New Orleans ignored much the rest of the market for a few days, though. But they did reunite with cornerback Patrick Robinson, which is a good get, and the addition of safety Kurt Coleman plugs a hole.

Where the Saints missed, though, was in the trenches in front of those two guys. According to Rapoport, the team had a meeting set with Wilkerson, who never wound up leaving Green Bay.

But the market doesn’t lack for options if the Saints want to seek out a consolation prize to help the Cameron Jordan-led front. Richardson is a solid option if the price is right. Or they could go all out and grab Suh, depending on how they view the entire scope of their offseason.

This is something the Saints can hit in the draft, too, but the focus there might be surrounding Brees with as many athletes as possible for a final potential run.patriots_122

Yankees’ Tyler Wade, Brandon Drury make awesome plays

Though Curry finished with just three sacks to go with 42 tackles, Eliot Shorr-Parks of felt he played better than that:

His contract was an issue for the Eagles as they kept adding talent. As Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reported, Curry was released before the $5 million guarantee in his $9 million base salary for 2018 kicked in.

Philadelphia had tried to restructure his contract and trade him but was unable to do so, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The Eagles’ loss was a gain for the Buccaneers, who added an experienced pass-rusher who can contribute on all three downs. Per Pro Football Reference, Curry was second among Philly defensive linemen with 576 snaps last season and could play even more in Tampa with less competition for playing time.

Previously, Claiborne was a liability because of his long injury history.

Mariota has proved to be a great centerpiece, but he needs more pop around him as the team moves away from the run-heavy style of Mike Mularkey and Terry Robiskie. The defense stopped the run and rushed the passer well under Dick LeBeau, but the Titans lacked in playmaking quotient and secondary stability.

Before the Titans go to work with six overall picks in the 2018 NFL Draft, they have nearly $48 million under the salary cap (per available to spend on veteran free agents. Here’s a look at the types of players on whom they might spend it.

The Bears drafted their franchise quarterback in Mitchell Trubisky last year. That sets up exactly where their NFL free agency priorities need to be this year.

Looking at Chicago’s biggest offseason team needs, many are related to helping Trubisky make a leap in Year 2, his first season with Matt Nagy. The new head coach and returning GM Ryan Pace, before their current seven selections in the draft, have a little more than $41 million under the salary cap to sign free agents of good value.

Defensively, the Bears look good in several areas because of the strong front seven they still have for coordinator Vic Fangio. The draft is a good way to build up depth as that side of the ball, with the exception of one position, goes on the free agency backburner.

Avery Williamson will be difficult to retain as a free agent after a strong season. The Titans have Wesley Woodyard signed through 2019, but he turns 32 in July. The Jets’ Demario Davis would be a fine pickup to replace Williamson. For the shorter term, older options such as the Chiefs’ Derrick Johnson and the Jaguars’ Paul Posluszny are out there. The Colts’ Jon Bostic needs some consideration as a cheaper option.

Jimmy Graham will not be returning to the Seahawks in 2018. That makes the five-time Pro Bowler the best tight end on the Calvin Pickard Jersey NFL free agency open market.

Nationals send home 2017 top pick Seth Romero for violating team policy

The Nationals sent 2017 first-round pick Seth Romero home from spring training for violating a team policy, Yahoo Sports reported and the Washington Post confirmed through a team spokesperson.

If we take all of those runs saved and lost over the course of a season, we would find their Plus/Minus score: the runs saved or lost because of a player’s defense over the course of a season. A perfectly average defender will have a Plus/Minus score of zero. Above average defenders will have a score above zero, and below average will have a score below zero.

Plus/Minus score is the core component of DRS and is representative of the general philosophy behind it: assigning runs to players based on making plays compared to an average defender. But DRS is not wholly Plus/Minus runs saved, it consists of the following components:

Hideki Matsui last played in the majors in 2012, but the international star still finds himself connected to the game.

Known as Godzilla during a 20-year career that spanned Japan, New York, California and Tampa Bay, Matsui is now doing what he can to give back to baseball at multiple levels. Speaking with Sporting News, he talked about retirement, working for the Yankees, transitioning to America and more.

The conversation has been edited for clarity and length. Answers were relayed by Roger Kahlon, Matsui’s interpreter.

Explained: As I like to say, spring training means nothing until it means something. This phrase often uttered by players who struggle in spring training and want to get the media of their backs.

As Run-DMC once said, “it’s tricky.” Or was that Defensive-Runs-Saved-DMC? I digress.

DRS is calculated by an organization called The Fielding Bible, which compiles and publishes defensive statistics for players season by season. The Fielding Bible also publishes books of the same name, describing their methodology for calculating their metrics, though much of their information is available on their website.

DRS principally relies on batted ball data from Baseball Info Solutions — a huge dataset that is usually used by professional sports teams for analytic scouting. Batted balls by BIS are graded based on the direction that the ball is hit, the distance of the ball, the speed of the ball off the bat and the type of the batted ball (line drive, fly ball and so forth).

NBA wrap: Russell Westbrook, Paul George show All-Star form in win over 76ers

After a brutally slow start to the season, the Thunder are starting to look like contenders.

Oklahoma City rattled off its eighth straight win Sunday with a 122-112 home victory over the 76ers. Russell Westbrook led the way with 37 points, 14 assists and nine rebounds, while newly minted All-Star Paul George added 31 points.

Bulls guard Zach LaVine scored just six points on 2-of-11 shooting (0-5 from 3-point range) in a 110-96 loss to the Bucks. LaVine had five rebounds and five assists, but Denzel Valentine made a case for starting after scoring 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting.

The Celtics have struggled in January, but continue to lead the Eastern Conference. Nuggets shooting guard Gary Harris is enjoying a breakout season, averaging 17.3 points per game.

I also had a good time when my buddy Marcel Schaefer and his family visited us. He plays for the Tampa Bay Rowdies in Florida and recently came to Boston to support me at the TD Garden in person. I hope to return the favor soon. He definitely has the better weather.

And now, let’s answer some questions! I picked some of the #AskTheis questions, thanks for sending them in!

Oliver S. (Twitter): How are you handling the trash talking in the NBA? Does that have an impact on the game at all?

Theis: There is some trash talk from time to time, but so far I’m not really taking part in it, therefore it doesn’t really have an impact. Let’s see what the future holds.

James Gatter (Twitter): What made you want to leave the German league and come to play in the NBA?

Theis: It was the right time, the right team, the right city and the right coach. And of course it was always my dream to make it to the NBA. So it was pretty simple!

Mariners working to finalize one-year deal with Ichiro

Ichiro Suzuki is nearing a return to the Seattle Mariners, who are working to finalize an agreement with the former franchise icon, a source confirmed to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick.

USA Today Sports first reported Monday that Ichiro and the Mariners were close to a one-year major league deal.

Ichiro became a free agent when the Miami Marlins declined his $2 million club option for 2018. The move by the Marlins was the start of an anticipated payroll purge by Derek Jeter’s new ownership group. Jeter and Ichiro were New York Yankees teammates for 2? seasons.

Ichiro ranks 22nd with 3,080 career hits but started only 22 games last year and had 196 at-bats, the lowest total of his 17-year career. He set a big league mark with 109 plate appearances as a pinch hitter, and had a franchise record 27 pinch-hits.

Ichiro was batting .202 on July 4 but hit .315 the rest of the way to finish at .255. He became just the sixth player 43 or older to record at least 50 hits.

Ichiro, who has said he wants to play until he’s 50, was 27 when he began his major league career. He had 1,278 hits while playing nine years in Japan

I wanted Lindor right-handed, etc., so we put him [Chapman] in the game there. And I also had told myself, actually before the game, is that if you get a big lead and you have to use him early, make sure you get somebody up and get him out. So I had it in my mind to do that, and I just didn’t say it to [pitching coach] Chris Bosio in time.”

Would that decision come back to haunt Maddon the next night? After all, it was only five extra pitches and a few easy warm-ups. But combined with his stint on Wednesday, Chapman had thrown 62 pitches, way more than he had in any back-to-back outings all season.

“I feel blessed that I’m just healthy to pitch in this situation,” Chapman said after Game 6. “This is [why] the Cubs brought me over.”

It’s the one move Maddon regretted. How could he forget to get a pitcher up?

“Because you’re thinking about so many things offensively, and you get through the moment [the home run] you wanted to get through, and I’m thinking to myself, ‘If we score right here, you have to get him out.’ So I’m thinking then, ‘Inning’s over, inning’s over.’ And I’m waiting, waiting, I said, ‘Get Stropy up.’ And I just said it too late.”

Scout around: Take a look around the draft room, test each button to see what it does, and get used to the layout of the draft app. Once you’re on the clock, things move quickly!

He’s learned to surrender deep 2-point attempts in favor of more penetration (drawing more fouls) and more 3-pointers.

Pacers: Indiana will host Atlanta on March 9 to complete the four-game season series. … The Pacers are 13-16 on the road. They finished 13-28 away from home last season. … Indiana had a season-high 57 rebounds in a 116-93 home win over Atlanta on Friday, part of a streak of five straight games with at least 50 rebounds. This time, the Pacers were outrebounded 49-43.

Hawks: Isaiah Taylor had 13 points. … G Malcolm Delaney (right knee strain) had four points in his return after missing two games. … F DeAndre Bembry (abdominal strain) missed his second straight game.

He’s posting fewer overall attempts (19.1 per game versus 19.8 in 2016-17), but he’s averaging a career high 8.2 3-point attempts per game.

Wizards coach Scott Brooks said before the game that Wall will begin on-court work consisting of light shooting soon, maybe Friday or Saturday.

With Valanciunas on the bench with two quick fouls, the Wizards hit three 3s and jumped out to an 18-4 lead.

The Raptors reserves keyed a rally and Toronto took its first lead at 35-34 on Malcolm Miller’s 3-pointer with 7:50 left in the first half.

Raptors: Rookie F OG Anunoby, who left Wednesday’s game with a right ankle sprain, sat out. … Jakob Poeltl had three blocks and has blocked a shot in 11 straight games. … Split the season series with Washington 2-2.

Wizards: Had their streak of eight consecutive games with 25 or more assists snapped. … Streak of 100-point games was snapped at 15. … Outrebounded the Raptors 47-34. … Satoransky finished with 10 points, six rebounds and eight assists.49ers_213

Super Bowl 2018 score by quarter: Eagles lead Patriots 9-3 after 1st quarter

Atlanta’s brand new stadium helped the city edge out Miami, New Orleans, and Tampa for hosting rights. Instead, Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium will play host to Super Bowl 54, while Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium will take on the responsibility the following year.

“We didn’t get the stops at all, and we just stopped executing in the fourth quarter offensive and defensively,” Fournier said. “That’s how we lost the game. Bad execution. No movement at all. We were all kind of watching each other, and the momentum shifted.”

Orlando led 76-65 early in the second half, a lead that disappeared quickly when Enes Kanter scored three baskets a 12-0 run that put the Knicks ahead for the first time since the middle of the first quarter.

A layup by Lance Thomas with 9:24 left put the Knicks ahead permanently and launched an 18-6 run that produced a 113-102 lead with 3:39 left.

Knicks: Thursday marked the seventh anniversary of the Knicks’ acquisition of F Carmelo Anthony. … F Troy Williams, signed to a 10-day contract Wednesday, scored four points in six minutes.
