In a season where the Houston Rockets have become one of the league’s best teams, scoring a career-high in points like Clint Capela did on Monday night doesn’t get congratulations. It draws comments on how he needs to play like he did over the New Orleans Pelicans more often.
Rookie Jordan Bell scored in double figures for the second time with 11 points, while Omri Casspi and Shaun Livingston also started for the defending champions, who were coming off a 6-0 road trip. It marked the franchise’s first time doing so in that long of a stretch away from home.
“We’re going to need that in the future if we want to continue to keep winning with Steph and Draymond out,” Durant said of the contributions from so many players.
Now, the Warriors will get to stay home for almost the entire rest of the year except for a trip to face the Lakers on Dec. 18.
Perry’s right leg bent awkwardly as he ran into the back of Carolina’s Jeff Skinner. The 2011 NHL MVP has played in 239 straight regular-season games and 40 playoff contests since Dec. 28, 2014.
Coach Randy Carlyle said Perry was being evaluated at a hospital.
“I think we looked a little bit tired tonight,” he said. “Even though you’re tired, you get some great performances from a couple of key guys. Quick was great tonight.”
Things did not look promising for Los Angeles through most of overtime. The Hurricanes controlled the puck for almost the entire period.
“I got a little nervous for the guys on the ice because it was a long change,” Stevens said. “I think they probably made three line changes there. I thought the guys played really smart.”
Why’d they both get suspended? Players rarely get suspended when they’ve also been ejected from a game. But that’s not a hard and fast rule. Case in point: Marshawn Lynch was ejected and then suspended one game for putting his hands on an official in Week 7.
Both of those topics are more pleasant than the 3-8 Colts, who dropped a 20-16 loss to the Titans on Sunday.
The Colts have blown six halftime leads this year, including against the Titans. Pagano was asked if this situation is starting to feel like Groundhog Day. His answer was a doozy.
Martellus Bennett is a New England Patriots tight end again after his time with the Green Bay Packers came to a contentious end. While Bennett’s problem with the Packers was with the team’s handling of his injury, the players in the locker room still took his departure a little personally.
But the 5-4 team is using the slight as an opportunity to come together and unify the locker room.
We can’t wait to see what celebrations the Eagles come up with for Week 13 and beyond.
That’s natural when a team is as dire of straits are they are now. While was a bit shadier to the most recent stuff, it had plenty of nostalgia for the past, beginning with the films, and .Thanks large part to Backlund and his ability to drive play whenever he’s out on the ice.Belinelli Prior to his career, played for Italy’s Lega A Virtus Bologna and Fortitudo Bologna. The key is that you probably have to sell it very quickly because now is the time when people are the most excited and the most fanatic about these kinds of things.
This one was essentially over at halftime. Stafford threw for 361 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Lions to a convincing 30-17 win over the Packers at Lambeau Field.
Detroit did not punt in a game for the first time since 1971 and held a significant time-of-possession advantage of 36:55-23:05.
It was just the second win for the Lions in the state of Wisconsin since 1991, but both wins have now come in the last three trips to Green Bay.
The Lions grabbed the momentum on their first offensive series, a drive kept alive by a Packers mistake.
“Experience makes players better in this league, but you want to make sure that they’re ready,” 49ers GM John Lynch recently told co-host Gil Brandt and me on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “That not only includes Jimmy when he’s up to speed on the offense.”
The 49ers finally got their first win at the expense of the struggling Giants. Win No. 2 probably won’t come in their next game, after their bye this week, against the Seahawks.
Thursday night’s game in Pittsburgh will air nationally on NBC and NFL Network. It’s the second of five consecutive Thursday night games that were scheduled to be televised on NBC throughout the season (not including the NFL season-opener) as part of the NFL’s “Thursday Night Football” expansion package for 2016 and ’17. NBC will also televise the Thanksgiving night game between the Giants and Redskins on Thursday, Nov. 23. CBS carried five Thursday night games earlier this year. In addition to CBS and NBC, NFL Network broadcasts every Thursday night game of the season.
NBC will utilize its “dual” SkyCam system to present a new primary viewing angle for its coverage of Titans vs. Steelers on Thursday night. The network’s SkyCam coverage received widespread acclaim from viewers when it was pressed into action due to fog during “Sunday Night Football” in Week 7.
If the NFL playoffs were beginning next weekend, the Eagles and Saints would be the top seeds in the NFC with the Steelers and Patriots getting first-round byes in the AFC.
Those four teams have emerged as obvious championship contenders, but they’re not alone. While the Eagles improved to an NFL-best 8-1 record with a 51-23 throttling of the Broncos on Sunday, the Rams (6-2) and Panthers (6-3) joined the Steelers (6-2), Patriots (6-2), Vikings (6-2) and Chiefs (6-3) as teams with at least six wins after nine weeks.
(And now he’s dealing with an un-Packers-like issue off the field.) Jamaal Williams had promise but got banged up early, and Devante Mays blew his chance Sunday with an early fumble. That’s a lot of focus on one position not to find an answer when the Packers need it most.
They at least should be more of a challenge to a Saints defense that has performed well against some … questionable opposition the last three weeks (Brett Hundley, Mitchell Trubisky, an injured Jameis Winston/Ryan Fitzpatrick).
Denver finally appears to get a stop as Brady throws a pass to James White on third down that loses 3 yards, but Denver has too many men on the field on the ensuing punt and is called for the penalty, giving the Patriots a first down.
Touchdown, Patriots. Denver’s defense has no answers for New England. The Patriots march down the field and score on an 8-yard run by Dion Lewis to increase their lead to 34-16. The Broncos only had 10 defenders on the field when Lewis ran it in.
Facing a third-and-14, Tevin Coleman catches a pass, bounces off a defender and gains 15 yards to keep Atlanta’s drive alive.
Thought this is just the team’s second varsity season, Rood is actively working to create traditions and rivalries for the players to rally around, such as The Kimball Cup, a helmet that serves as a trophy for the victor of the matchup with neighboring Roosevelt High.
“We chose to come to the University of Chicago!” [coach Chris] Wilkerson shouts inside the cramped space, voice hoarse from yelling during the game. The players shush each other in anticipation and look to Wilkerson, standing in the middle of the huddle.
Glass liked Miller’s DNA as the youngest, brashest branch of a coaching tree that began with Miller’s father, John, a Hall of Fame high school coach hailing from the Pittsburgh region, and gave way to Sean, the Wildcats’ coach of nine years. He loved Miller’s tenacity, how he willed into existence a prodigious career as an ACC point guard (he remains NC State’s fourth-leading 3-point scorer of all time) despite no height and lackluster athleticism. And he downright coveted Miller’s full embrace of the expectations Glass laid bare for Indiana basketball.
Prescott’s rookie contract with the Cowboys will earn him about $2.7 million, but back when Peggy was battling cancer and he was still in school, like many families taking on the disease, they were stretched thin financially.
When Peggy gave up her manager job to move down and care for her parents, she lost her health insurance; her parents helped as much as they could with the means of retired teachers. Second in importance to only her treatment was that Peggy make it to as many of Dak’s games as she was physically able; these trips cost around $1,000 per week, but they improved her outlook more than anything else possibly could.
It wasn’t until the fall of 2013—the season when Prescott took over as Mississippi State’s starter after previously being used as a change-of-pace phenom—when the disease attacking Peggy on the inside became obvious on the outside.
On this night, the Clippers steamroll the Granada-Huntley-EC/Truman Jaguars, 76-0. There are no offensive tackles in the nine-man game, which makes team speed a major advantage. Just five minutes into the first quarter, Plonsky, the senior receiver, jets past his man coverage and scores his 41st career receiving touchdown, tying the state record held by Michael Floyd, now with the Vikings.
Meanwhile, Bamba was filling binders with information ranging from the tempo the Longhorns played to the quality of the business school. For each one of his finalists — Texas, Kentucky, Duke and Michigan — Bamba dissected what each program had to offer, helping to guide his decision.
“It means a lot to me to step on this field and carry on that tradition of good receivers.”
Thielen’s relationship with Vikings tradition makes him one of the most popular jerseys among tailgaters on Sunday morning, with the Vikes hosting the Lions at noon. A Minnesota State-Mankato alum, Thielen is the rare NFL player who has spent his entire youth, college and pro career in one state.
Quarterback Joe Flacco (six touchdowns, eight interceptions) and the NFL’s 30th-ranked run defense have underperformed, although the latter did a nice job bottling Miami’s Jay Ajayi in last Thursday night’s 40-0 shutout.
It’s uncertain whether Flacco (concussion) will be ready to return for Sunday’s game against Tennessee. Regardless, the Ravens need more consistent production in the passing game to remain viable in the AFC North race.
Georgia simply won’t call the Dawgs off in the first quarter. Clearly, Kirby Smart’s plan is to come in and embarrass the Gators like a guy who went 1-3 as a player at Georgia against Florida and is 0-1 as Georgia’s head coach against the Gators.
When Griffin arrived at Staples Center for his free-agency pitch meeting on July 1, he found the Clippers had erected something of a maze for him with temporary walls. Griffin walked his 3-year-old son, Ford, through the art gallery-style corridors, and found photos hanging at each turn: Griffin on his green Huffy bike with his brother, Taylor, when they were kids; Griffin playing in college; Griffin as a Clipper.
Ballmer stocked the front office with smart new hires — including Jerry West. They weren’t well-positioned to rebuild, anyway; Rivers had frittered away too many draft picks, and whiffed on fringe signings. They would build again around Griffin — and maybe Jordan.
That gave Watson 168.86 fantasy points for the season through seven games, the most by any quarterback through that many contests since at least 1950. In fact, only Eric Dickerson (200.5) and Marcus Allen (174.38) had more using PPR scoring through their first seven career games among players at any position during that time span, and Dickerson (176.5) was the only one with more using non-PPR scoring.
There are only so many shots to be created for this squad, overachievers as they are. The Heat have only one rotation player with a positive net rating — Josh Richardson at plus-0.1. At No. 27 in rebounding rate, the Heat desperately need Hassan Whiteside to return from a knee injury. He returned to practice on Friday, but was a no-go in Saturday night’s loss to Boston.
The good news for the Hornets? A league-average defense last season has vaulted to seventh with the arrival of Dwight Howard from Atlanta. The bad news? A league-average offense last season has tumbled to 21st. Now Charlotte faces a week when they’ll play three tough road games at Memphis, San Antonio and Minnesota, along with a home date against Team Giannis.
He gave Bellinger’s rookie season a Level Nine rating — one of 47 such seasons in major league history. James wrote that 30 percent of those players are in the Hall of Fame or nearly certain to get there.
“I have no retirement plans whatever,” Roush said. “The article came from an ill-advised stream of consciousness I had at the end of last season.” He then said: “People retire in order to go do things they’re passionate about. I already have a job that allows me to be passionate beyond my imagination as a youngster.” Roush turns 75 on April 19.
Khalil Mack (30 tackles, 4.5 sacks, 11 quarterback hurries) continues to play at an elite level, but the overall play of his unit will keep him from repeating as NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
The entire offense has regressed, and the defense isn’t markedly improved from last year’s No. 26 ranking.
In the early days of college football, Chicago was a powerhouse. The original Monsters of the Midway were founding members of the Big Ten conference. The Maroons played in a 50,000-seat stadium and were coached by Amos Alonzo Stagg, a legendary football pioneer who led the team to seven Big Ten titles and claimed two national titles.
Thank God for the Browns. They’re the only dependable team. They’re 0-6 for the second straight year, and they’re stuck down the same rabbit hole they simply cannot escape. Even the other 0-6 team, San Francisco, is ridiculously competitive. Margin of the 49ers’ last five losses: 3, 2, 3, 3 and 2 points, respectively.
I don’t love any team. But before getting to the newsreel of the weekend (and the coming week), here’s how I see the top five:
Kansas City (5-1). The last vision you have of a team is usually the one you remember best, so you might find this strange. But the Chiefs are 15-2 versus teams not named Pittsburgh since Oct. 1, 2016, and they’ve got a 12-game winning streak in a tough division. They’ve just got to protect Alex Smith better and keep Tyreek Hill upright.
Enter Garoppolo, who probably won’t start against the Cardinals this week but might be ready to enter the lineup against the Giants on Nov. 12. With the 49ers on bye the following week, Garoppolo will likely be under center no later than Nov. 26, when the fourth-year quarterback will be up against the mighty Seahawks.
Dawgs quarterback Jake Fromm just lofted a beautiful 17-yard touchdown pass to Javon Wims, who absolutely Randy Moss’d poor Marco Wilson, to inflate Georgia’s blowout to 14-0. Not exactly the slant Gators defensive back Chauncey Gardner Jr. was looking for, either.
We haven’t even hit the 30-minute mark in this midday football bonanza and we have yet another touchdown! This time, it’s Wimbush, who brings Notre Dame level with NC State at 7-7 with a dart to Durham Smythe.
The Jaguars suddenly look like they’re a good quarterback away from being one of the best teams in football, given how effectively they can run the ball and hold up on defense
The Bills are clearing out space and may move on from Tyrod Taylor. The Browns and Jets will happily throw a dump truck of money at Cousins. (The Cardinals probably won’t be able to afford him.)
If Cousins hits the market and wants to get paid, he won’t lack for suitors. No team might be quite as appealing as the familiarity he sought with Shanahan, though, which strengthens Washington’s position. Sure, if Roethlisberger retires, Cousins would be a great replacement, but that’s hardly a lock. It’s entirely possible that the relationship between Cousins and this Washington administration has been destroyed to the point that Cousins might have no choice but to leave, but if Washington finally makes a real offer to its best quarterback in a generation, Cousins might be more apt to listen if Garoppolo is entrenched in San Francisco.
It’s not outrageous to ask an NFL team’s quarterback to hold a post-game press availability and a mid-week press availability during the season. In baseball, the starting pitcher is almost always available at his locker after a game.
In basketball, the superstars hold court with varying degrees of frequency and then after every postseason game. Every other quarterback in the league does these press conferences, and they’re largely uneventful because you stand out there, act civil, give some boilerplate answers then everybody goes home . . . not so much happy, but at least feeling nothing.
The biggest boy of all? That would be linebacker/quarterback Joel Lanning, college football’s folk hero, who stuffs TCU’s Sewo Olonilua on third-and-3 at the fourth-ranked Horned Frogs’ own 30-yard line. Iowa State leads 7-0 with 1:19 left in the first quarter. The Cyclones beat Oklahoma on Oct. 7. Is lightning striking twice inside this tornado?
Throughout this piece, I’ll be referencing “OTD.” OTD stands for opportunity-adjusted touchdowns. It is a statistic that weighs every carry/target and converts the data into one number that indicates a player’s scoring opportunity. For example, if a player has an OTD of 3.0, it means that a league-average player who saw the same number of carries/targets in the same area of the field would have scored three touchdowns.
“I wasn’t trying to prove a point,” he says. “I never in a million years thought the players were going to go on strike.”
When Schlopy reported to the Bills after the strike, he remembers there being a tremendous amount of animosity from the regular players. At one point, in the lobby of the hotel that the team had placed the replacement players in, one of the Bills’ regular players showed up with two dogs and confronted a group of the scab players.
